If you are eagerly waiting to play the best action role-playing games of 2018 and 2019, here we have picked 10 games for you. The first 5 games will be released this year and the remaining 5 will come out in 2019. - Darksiders III
Developed by Gunfire Games, Darksiders III lets players control the game’s protagonist Fury whose mission is to destroy the Seven Deadly Sins. She uses magic and tools such as whips, flails, swords, and daggers in combat in her quest to restore the balance between good and evil. On her adventurous missions, Fury fights against different mysterious creatures in a continuous open world environment. Darksiders III is scheduled to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 27, 2018.
- Ashen
Ashen is a single-player, action RPG releasing in 2018 for Xbox One and PC. The game has multiplayer capabilities but not in the traditional form. Developer Aurora44 describes it as passive multiplayer. Ashen features an open world environment where players build relationships and help each other but as NPCs. Ashen will arrive sometime this year, but no specific release date has been confirmed yet.
- Bard’s Tale 4: Barrows Deep
The single player, first-person RPG Bard’s Tale 4 brings new monsters, puzzles, and traps for an adventurous journey. With turn-based strategy combat and rich graphics, Bard’s Tale 4 reminds longtime RPG fans why role-playing games are so popular. After releasing the first three games, the series creators were silent and then inXile Entertainment launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game and finally, Bird’s Tale 4 is coming. The game will be released on September 18, 2018 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC with Mac and Linux versions due for release later this year.
- God Eater 3
For new players, God Eater games are a bit similar to the Monster Hunter franchise games. Series creator Bandai Namco Entertainment has released many screenshots and teaser trailers in the past. The game developer has also introduced some characters including Hugo, Zeke, and Claire. Recently, they confirmed that the mysterious beasts Aragami are returning with more power and revamped effects. The game will be released for PS4 and PC in Q4 2018.
- Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
Travis Strikes Again will feature varied gameplay styles and the series director Goichi Suda, known as Suda 51, has confirmed that the gameplay styles will reflect his own childhood inspirations. While the game developers have not revealed much of the gameplay, they mentioned that you can get some clues about the gameplay from games like Zero4 Champ, Smash TV, and Gauntlet. In the trailer, we have seen different aspects the game focuses on and these elements include racing, action, and puzzles. Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes will be released at some point in 2018.
- Code Vein
If you’re wondering why Code Vein is on the list of action RPGs coming in 2019, it’s because Bandai Namco needs more time to complete the development of the game. The publisher has pushed the game’s release to 2019 which was set for September 2018. Code Vein game takes inspiration from Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls and features a playable character known as Vein. The character uses Gifts (special powers) to kill enemy creatures and is accompanied by an AI-controlled character. The game will be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
- Biomutant
Biomutant is a fun game where you control a completely customizable furry creature. In this game, players go out and fight against different monsters using creatively designed toys, guns, melee, and special moves. As you make progress, you can see the changes in how the mutant looks when certain stats go up and down depending on the strength, charisma, and vitality of the character. Biomutant doesn’t have a release date and many fans believe that the game won’t come out in 2018, citing the Metro Exodus release delay. Biomutant is in development for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
- Greedfall
Greedfall takes you back to the 17th century where you’ll find magic, monsters and supernatural powers working together to fight off invaders. Greedfall features a unique visual style and a huge fictional world to explore. You land on an island as a neutral human being and then you are required to choose who you befriend – locals or foreign nations. It’s a great journey where mystery follows you everywhere and you will find yourself in the middle of rising political tension between locals and settlers. The game will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
- Indivisible
It’s a story of a girl named Ajna who is on a journey to discover the mystery behind her magical powers. During her journey, she gains new abilities, defeats enemies, and meets different people including some heroes. With a focus on exploration, the game developer Lab Zero Games has designed combat mechanics with inspiration from Valkyrie Profile. Indivisible is in development for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch with a scheduled release in 2019.
- Anthem
Anthem features both single-player and co-operative multiplayer gameplay elements. One of the long-awaited actions RPGs Anthem requires an uninterrupted internet connection and unlike the previous Bioware games, Anthem doesn’t let players build any romantic relationships with NPCs. The “shared world” environment allows up to four players to form a team and explore the landscape. The game is still in development and it will be released on February 22, 2019, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
